Orthopaedic & Back-Care Pilates
These classes draw on the principles of precise and controlled movement that form the foundation of Pilates but are specifically tailored for people with orthopaedic conditions or back pain to help improve, maintain, or restore physical function. Obviously, you should listen to your doctor and if you’ve been told not to exercise then you should follow their advice, but every Pilates exercise can be modified to meet your specific needs. I am qualified to work with people with common medical and orthopaedic conditions and I will work with you to enable you to participate safely in the class.
I’m also passionate about the use of Pilates as a therapeutic treatment for conditions such as back pain, arthritis and osteoporosis, and the role it can play in aiding recovery from joint replacement surgery. I have a range of specialist exercise qualifications and I draw on this knowledge in my Back-Care Pilates courses and Pilates-based personal training sessions to provide tailored exercise programmes that can improve balance, mobility, strength, and flexibility, and help to alleviate pain. These tailored programmes can make a significant difference not only to people’s bodies and to their health, but to their happiness and their overall quality of life.
The back is comprised of a multitude of moving parts that constantly work together to enable our bodies to function. Over time, or through injury, small changes in these moving parts and the way they work can affect how we move, and for some people this can eventually lead to back pain.
Back-Care Pilates is a 12-week, Pilates-based, corrective exercise course designed specifically for people with back pain.
Back-Care Pilates Course
What the course involves
The course uses slow, gentle and controlled movements that are performed standing up, sitting on a chair, and sitting or lying on a mat. You will be guided through small and simple movements that will help you to regain control over your back and your body.
The sessions use stretching, mobilisation, and strengthening exercises to train the abdominal and back muscles that support your spine. These exercises will help you to improve your posture and develop your awareness of neutral spinal alignment as these are essential in maintaining a healthy back. Your hip and shoulder joints also play an important role in how stress is placed on your back during everyday movements, so the course includes exercises to help you improve your strength and mobility in these areas too. All of this will enable you to reduce uneven stresses on your spine, improve the condition of your back, and help you to live a happier, healthier life.
In each session, you will be able to work at your own pace so that you can focus on safe and effective movement. All the exercises are adaptable, and can be modified to suit you and your body.
Each week you will be given advice on exercises you can do at home throughout the week that will aid in your recovery. By the end of the 12 weeks you will have accumulated an ‘exercise directory’ that you can continue to use after the course.
Each course consists of 12 one-hour sessions, delivered over 12 weeks (one session per week).
Who the course is suitable for
This course is suitable for people with no experience of Pilates, as well as those who have done Pilates previously.
Your safety is paramount, so before you enrol on the course I will talk with you about the nature and cause of your pain, and about any medical diagnoses you have received, in order to ensure it is safe for you to participate. In very rare cases, this course will not be appropriate, but it is suitable for over 95% of people with back pain.
